Burma banknotes offer a rich and complex numismatic journey shaped by British colonial rule, Japanese wartime occupation, and eventual independence. Each issue reflects a pivotal era in the region’s monetary history.
Early banknotes from British Burma include King George V Government of India issues overprinted with “Legal Tender in Burma Only,” followed by the distinctive Reserve Bank of India peacock series featuring King George VI. During World War II, the Japanese military introduced their own currency—Japanese Invasion Money (JIM)—marking a dramatic shift in Burma’s monetary landscape.
Following liberation, Burma briefly returned to Indian-issued currency, including King George VI notes with overprints such as Military Administration of Burma and Burma Currency Board. These India Overprint notes are especially prized by collectors for their historical context and limited circulation.
After gaining independence, the newly formed Union of Burma began issuing its own banknotes. These featured peacocks, elephants, and prominent national figures like General Aung San, reflecting a growing national identity. In 1989, the country's name was officially changed to Myanmar, and subsequent issues bear this new name.
